For 50 years, I was a drummer and sometimes lead vocalist for Vancouver's ultimate party-rockers, Sparkling Apple (their speciality: "drunk rock", which you had to be drunk to play and drunk to appreciate). Nowadays, furthering my tradition of musical life, yours truly is a podcasting/Internet radio DJ and graphic artist, with my own program entitled "The Captain Maniac Show" -- imaginative or what? Rather than subject listeners to one particular genre of music, typical presentations cover a wide spectrum of rock and roll, from 60s British Invasion to Rockabilly to 50s rockers to Psychedelic Oldies and all points in between. Join us for our two-hour weekly show from Canada.

"I’ve often thought about doing a radio show like this ever since seeing the Clint Eastwood movie ‘Play Misty For Me’. Since Slade released Mama Weer All Crazee Now in 1972, I have always been drawn towards the “rockier” genres of music. My teenage years were spent listening to Alan “Fluff” Freeman on the radio, which broadened my taste and also gave me an awareness and appreciation of classical music, due to his use of it in show jingles. I’d also like to think that he’s had an effect on the way I present Headz Up.

I retired to what I thought at the time was a quiet seaside town and instead found something entirely different - a town with a lively music scene and Deal Radio! I worked for the NHS for 35 years managing mental health services. Now, after a chance encounter with Deal Radio weeks before the 2020 lockdown, I volunteer as a DJ and have a radio show under my belt. With no previous broadcasting experience, it was a challenging beginning that led to The Global Underground radio show.

It’s been said I have an eclectic taste in music. The first time someone said that I thought they were being rude but I consulted me dictionary and found they were right! And it’s fair to say they’ve gotten more diverse as the years have passed.
