On a damp autumnal evening, Southampton melodic punk outfit Slackrr performed at the vibrant punk rock/Mexican venue where the burritos are hot and the tunes were plentiful. The trio is easily shaping up to be some of the best young talent the UK has to offer in the scene and it’s not hard to see why. Already gaining notoriety through the likes of Kerrang, The BBC and many other well know sources the groups brand of feel-good, up-tempo rock keeps you wanting more.

The line-up on the night saw bands four bands rock the joint with Medway act Smile Wide and heavy rock duo Sheena with its quirky queens of the stone age vibe getting things underway. The support for Slackrr came from another trio out of Medway The Spaces, with notable tracks Ellipsis and Jamie Knives whipping the crowd into a spin and bringing the positive energy.

Effortlessly blistering through the set with their infectious sound Slackrr had the fans dancing around the floor the minute they stepped foot onto the stage with frontman Scotty Perry assuming control with grace and ease. The group started with a crunchy intro jam to get you in the mood then cranked it up a gear into the fist-pumping track ‘Reflections’ with noting lyrics in the song reminiscing about the harder times spent while trying to make our way in this world. As the night carries on, so does the fun. It then sees tunes being played from the band’s debut record ‘Time, it waits for no one’ with the trio smashing through tracks ‘Nerve’ and a personal fave of mine ‘I Know’.

The growing popularity of Slackrr has earned them a spot on the newly released VR skater videogame featuring their hit ‘The Current’.

Heading towards the end of the set with all the burritos well scoffed by this point, Slackrr glides through a mix of old and new songs such as ‘We Are’ and ‘Home’ soon to be released on the record coming out 2022. They also managed all this whilst engaging with a few overzealous punters throughout to keep its clean-cut sound marshalled at the back by the energetic Joe Sammons on drums and complimented by the soothing backup vocals and elegant presence of bass guitarist Cait Bowyer.

They finished up with the crowd-pleasing, catchy number ‘Playing With Fire’ which saw the pit and everyone in the venue moving their booty’s without hesitation. And just like that, the fun was over, time flies I guess.

In all honesty, I would consider it a privilege to see the talented Slackrr in a smaller venue as it’s become clear that it’s not going to be long until they start selling out the bigger venues and become a household name. I cant wait to see what they produce next as the group have an uncanny ability for creating such positive, catchy music with great hooks that pull you in. Overall, a great night out, a solid performance all around and looking forward to seeing them rock the house again, check out the list of tour dates below…
