International Jazz Day

ECM Records

With Peter Purton

Background
share close

Peter Purton chooses music from one of the great independent jazz record labels.

Peter is an engineer turned psychology student turned journalist, folkie turned new waver turned jazzer. Introduced to jazz by a guy who was anxious to show off his new electrostatic loudspeakers, and couldn’t think of a better album to demonstrate them than Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert. He hardly noticed the HiFi but fell in love with the music.

‘My mate Dave cemented the deal by introducing me to the likes of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk, but I’ve always had a special fondness for ECM artists like Jarrett. And I even managed to achieve that holy grail of jazz fans, find a woman who would put up with me and my strange tastes in music.’
